SAY NO TO COMET BAY OUTLET & INLET PIPES
O.K. fellow wave wollopers.
Plans are in place to put in a Desalination plant in Port Kennedy with the inlet and outlet pipes at Secret Harbour (Surf Beach) and Golden Bay.
So what does it have to do with the underwear you are wearing?
Well nothing, but if you don't like the possibilty of 8 foot high pipes lying on top of the sea bed floor, stopping the natural movement and progression of sand to these immediate areas to stuff up the sand banks that give you the waves, then now is your time to have a spit.

If you also don't like the thought of heaps of salt and other nasties being flashed out of the outlet pipe, time to have spit also.
If you have surfed Secret Harbour (Surf Beach) then you better follow the simple instructions below.

Simple steps:
1. Either copy the submission below or :: CLICK HERE :: to down load in word format don't forget to put your Name, address and date on it.
2. Click on the email link below and paste or attach the word document to it.
3. Click on send and give the guy at the other end a headache with all the emails he has to open on his inbox.
4. Or just Click on send below opposing the pipes with out copying and pasting in the email, but don' forget to put your name and addrees on it.

Subject: DESALINATION PLANT (DESAL2)

SUBMISSION

It has been reported that a second Desalination Plant is planned for Port Kennedy with inlet/outlet pipes being installed in Secret Harbour (Surf Beach) and Golden Bay.

In relation to the intake & discharge Pipes, the raised pipes would trap north or south moving sediment in summer and winter, raising the seabed height and sea bed floor. This may affect the sand bank formations for surfers who utilise Surf Beach (Secret Harbour). This beach is the only immediate surfable beach in the area which is not only used by surfers from the Rockingham to Mandurah areas, but also used by thousands of surfers from all over the metropolitan area.

Unlike other sports or hobbies we do not rely on man made structures like football ovals, tennis courts, cricket pitches, swimming pools etc that the government provides. We rely on natures natural flow of sand movement throughout the seasons to produce sand banks that provide shape and form for swells to break upon.

Once the proposed pipes are laid this will/could have a dramatic effect on swirling along the bottom of the ocean and the natural carrying and displacement of sand within the immediate areas along the beaches shoreline.

This may also change the formation of the shape of the shoreline in years to come producing hazardous waves that dump closer to the shore line causing significant injury to not only surfers, but also swimmers and other beach users.

I understand from research that chlorination processes or sodium hypochloride process could produce explosive hydrogen gas. Industrial activities would include major maintenance and backup power generation, operational noise, lights and odours, as well as site access traffic (including large tanker traffic).

Ecologically, I also have serious reservations about the whole Port Kennedy proposal in regard to proximity to threatened ecological community sites and environmentally sensitive areas. Research has clearly demonstrated that the areas in concern lie in Comet Bay which is an important breeding ground for white bait and is a major breeding ground for Little Penguin.
The water corporation own criteria states that "Intake and outlet structures will avoid known Whitebait nurseries and little Penguin habitats". He proposals for Comet Bay are unsustainable, as the water corporation has a duty of care not only towards the general public who use the area for surfing, diving, fishing and swimming, but also to the ecological community that share the area.

I herby call upon the Water Corporation to honour their management plan for Desal 2 that has been accepted by the EPA, to avoid known whitebait nurseries and the Little Penguin habitats. I herby also call upon the Water Corporation to take into consideration the implications it may also cause for surfers using beaches in the immediate area.
Yours in anticipation
